Like a lost classic brought back to the present, this game is an "Old School" reality check; if you don't like it then you'll need to stick to your FPS's.
This game is not just a simple side-scroller - it has its pleasant complexities. It has a nice world of color to immerse you and the character in.
Cave Story brought me back 20 years ago, in my room drinking coke at one o clock in the morning, playing video games on my Commodore 64 and completely, happily lost.

A good game with average graphics. But graphics don't matter as much as game play which this game nails. People who like shooting, role-playing, platforming or all of them should download this game. Though the blocky graphics take some time to get used to, you will definitely still love this game. If you're worried about the difficulty - do not worry! The bosses are easy but also have a certain amount of challenge.

I'm amazed. Very. A game that is just less than a meg, yet it packs a huge punch. I mean... where would you find a game not only RPG, but also action and adventure as well?
The only gripe I would have to say is the weapon system. The weapons are great, don't get me wrong. But when you're fighting bosses, you need to switch to a specific weapon. Just selecting through the keys "a" and "s" can be frustrating.
Other than that, be prepared for this game to consume your hours like no tomorrow.
I can't say what makes it so great... it's an addictive, good looking, not so easy platform/RPG game... You are just a robot who can't remember who he is and doesn't know where is he, then you get involved in this original strange story and start killing little clue things, some bats and meet the Mimigas!
Just play it and you'll know what I'm talking about... can't lose... just 1 Mb.

played this game 1 year ago then gave up because it was too long then a few months later played it again and finished it the right a long way. There are so many ways to finish it but they don't reveal the full story
It took me a 1 month to finish it but If your a computer game freak then you probably finish it in like 2 days!!!

This game is quite amazing. It took five years to develop so it had better be good. Well, aside from the amazingly small download size, the awesome chiptune like music that will take you back to the days of the Super Nintendo and nice retro-style graphics, the gameplay is excellent too. It's something of a fuse between Castlevania and Metroid, with a storyline just as good as those classics. A 'must download.'
This Game is Great! I think its the best freeware game that i have played. The graphics are simple but good and effective. It reminds me of NES games, final fantasy and adventures all in one. Blasting enemies is the coolest thing you can do in this game and the leveling up system is real good. GET THIS GAME. It Rocks. Thanks to the man who made it. CHEERS>
Wow! What a fun little game! It definitely brought back fond memories of the DOS shareware days. It was kind of like Metroid in that you had to get new abilities to get certain places and then there was the cool RPG-style level-ups. In my opinion, the only better platform game on this site is Glace.
There are many freeware games out there, and most of them aren't commercial quality. I still haven't gotten very far into this game yet, but I already think this is by far the greatest freeware game ever created!!! I would be willing to pay money for this awesome game! 1,000,000,000 thumbs up!
I've just finished the game - great gameplay, nice idea of leveling up (every weapon has its own exp and levels - max. 3), quite long and interesting story.
And nice and funny ending signs.
At the beginning, you have to get used to poor graphics but the game is definitely worth trying.
