BomberMan VB

BomberMan VB

Arcade

Overview

BomberMan VB delivers classic explosive action that shines brightest in local multiplayer sessions, though technical hiccups and AI limitations prevent it from detonating at full potential. Early impressions suggest this remake captures the fundamental joy of strategic bombing runs while introducing fresh modes, though inconsistent performance and questionable controls create frustrating moments amidst the chaos. It's a nostalgic package that rewards patience with friends but falters when flying solo.

Core Gameplay and Modes

The heart of BomberMan VB remains true to the series' roots: strategic bomb placement to destroy obstacles and outmaneuver opponents. The twist comes through six distinct game modes that significantly expand beyond the original formula. Beyond standard deathmatches, players can engage in frantic Frag Fest battles or objective-based modes like Capture the Flag, creating welcome variety. These additions provide legitimate reasons to revisit the arena, especially when playing with others. The core satisfaction of trapping opponents in cleverly crafted explosive corridors remains intact, delivering those classic "aha!" moments when a perfectly timed detonation seals victory.

The trick of this is trying to get your opponent stuck.

Social Sparks vs. AI Stumbles

Local multiplayer emerges as BomberMan VB's undisputed highlight. Face-to-face matches generate genuine excitement, especially in modes like Last One Standing where every bomb placement carries high stakes. The simple mechanics become wonderfully tense when reacting to a human opponent's movements and strategies. Unfortunately, this social magic evaporates against the AI opponents. Computer-controlled bombers exhibit inconsistent behavior patterns that range from surprisingly clever to utterly baffling, creating uneven matches. The absence of difficulty settings exacerbates this issue, leaving players wishing for more refined solo challenges to match the excellent multiplayer foundation.

Technical Troubles

Several technical issues undermine the experience. Players report occasional audio glitches where music abruptly cuts out or distorts, breaking immersion during tense matches. The most persistent annoyance appears post-match: returning to menus often hides the mouse cursor, creating unnecessary friction when navigating options. Control implementation also draws criticism, with mouse input feeling particularly unsuited to the fast-paced action. While these glitches don't completely derail the fun, they accumulate into noticeable distractions during extended play sessions.

After a victor has been decided and you go back to the Game Menu you can't see the mouse arrow on the game window.

Bomberman VB is a remake of the original with a few extra added features. There are 6 different game modes to choose from including last one standing, frag fest, capture the flag, etc. The aim of bomberman is to set bombs that will blow up sections of wall and allow you to go further. In most of the game modes you will then have to set a bomb to kill your opponent once you can reach them. The trick of this is trying to get your opponent stuck. You can play either against the computer or against a friend. Both modes offer a great time but whatever you do, do not use the mouse as your control device as this seriously hinders the gameplay. A fun game especially when it comes to death match against a human opponent.

The Bomberman Series is one of my all time favorites so I would enjoy it if someone could make a decent remake of the original or an upgraded version with more maps, better music and other game play additions. I'm not asking for much but in this game sometimes the AI doesn't work right. Also it would be an improvement if you could add AI difficulty settings. The music messed up once. And after a victor has been decided and you go back to the Game Menu you can't see the mouse arrow on the game window. Although it had some malfunctions it was still pretty fun to play 1 on 1 with a friend.
