JOUST 3 - Revenge Of The Lava Troll

JOUST 3 - Revenge Of The Lava Troll

Arcade

Overview

JOUST 3 - Revenge Of The Lava Troll resurrects the spirit of its arcade ancestors with a familiar yet refreshed formula. Early feedback paints a picture of a faithful homage that modernizes the original's core loop while introducing subtle innovations. The experience seems to hinge on nostalgia, offering straightforward aerial combat that resonates with veterans but leaves room for refinement.

Nostalgia Meets Modern Tweaks

For those who remember flapping across pixelated screens on ostrich-like steeds, this sequel delivers an immediate hit of recognition. The core loop remains untouched: players mount flying creatures, joust against opponents to knock them off their mounts, and navigate environmental threats. Platforms serve as tactical waypoints in compact arenas, demanding quick reflexes to avoid fiery hazards and enemy flocks. It’s a design that prioritizes simplicity over complexity, leaning heavily on the original’s addictive "just one more try" appeal.

Where JOUST 3 evolves its legacy is through thoughtful additions. A new ammunition system introduces strategic resource management, forcing players to weigh aggressive attacks against conservation. The shift to a scrolling screen also modernizes the presentation, creating more dynamic encounters as the battlefield expands beyond static screens. These tweaks prevent the experience from feeling like a mere carbon copy, offering just enough novelty to justify revisiting this retro niche.

Same great graphics, you can shoot now with limited ammo. Scrolling screen allows for a more dynamic game play.

Visuals honor the original’s charm while embracing cleaner modern aesthetics. Vibrant backdrops and fluid animations distinguish friend from foe during chaotic mid-air clashes, though the art style deliberately avoids overwhelming detail to maintain the series’ arcade soul. Hazards like lava pits and fire traps pop with satisfying intensity, creating clear visual cues amid the feathery frenzy.

Verdict

Faithful arcade revival with modest strategic upgrades

If you remember playing the old Nintendo game called Joust then you will recognize this game. It is a modern day PC remake of that classic Nintendo game. You must fly around the level from platform to platform on your massive bird-like creature and try get each other off their own bird. If you are knocked off, you die. There are other things to watch for as well, like fire and other flying birds.
