Karack Review: An Experimental Platformer with Bounce and Draw Mechanics

Karack presents an intriguing fusion of platforming concepts that attempts to blend two distinct gameplay traditions into something new. This physics-based puzzle platformer centers around guiding an energetic ball toward its basket goal using unconventional methods. What sets it apart is its dual-mechanic approach: you can't directly control the ball, but instead draw temporary lines that influence its trajectory while navigating environments where bounced-upon blocks vanish instantly. This creates dynamic challenges where hesitation means lost opportunities.

The game introduces clever progression through environmental interactions. Players discover cannons that propel the ball between zones, encounter restricted drawing areas that test precision, and activate switches that unlock critical pathways. This gradual introduction of mechanics provides satisfying complexity as levels evolve, though the core experience remains focused on the simple joy of watching your drawn lines redirect the ball's chaotic journey toward its destination.

The one drawback is the ball is somewhat erratic when bouncing and it becomes difficult to plan any moves specifically, because things happen so fast.

This unpredictable ball physics emerges as the primary friction point. While the chaotic movement creates spontaneous moments of triumph when accidental bounces yield success, it undermines deliberate strategy. The fleeting nature of drawn lines - fading before you can adjust - combines with the ball's capricious behavior to create occasional frustration. These moments highlight the fine line Karack walks between charming unpredictability and uncontrolled chaos. Despite this, the core concept shines through as an inventive take on physics puzzles that rewards experimentation over precision.

There have been platformers before, oh, so many platform games. There have been games where you bounce (Within A Deep Forest;Bounce! Bounce! Bounce!and games where you draw (Chalk;Crayon Physics) but this game combines those things in one game. The idea is: a ball wants to get to a basket. Who can blame it? Now, the thing is - once the ball bounces on a block it vanishes, so you can't wait it out. And you can't directly interact with the ball either. Your only method of control is to draw lines around the place (the lines quickly fade, by the way). You guide the ball into the bucket either directly, or via cannons - simply knock the ball into a cannon and you can blast into a new zone or area. Along the way, new tricks will open up. Such as the cannons, sections of maps where you can't draw lines and switches which you need to hit in order to open a door on the way to finishing the level. The one drawback is the ball is somewhat erratic when bouncing and it becomes difficult to plan any moves specifically, because things happen so fast. However, it is a small qualm which is far outweighed by the shining points in the game.
