The Lost Kids

Puzzle

Overview

Based on early player impressions, The Lost Kids presents a deceptively simple package that reveals impressive mechanical depth beneath its unassuming exterior. While the visual presentation remains deliberately plain, the game's true strength lies in its clever character-based puzzle design that demands strategic thinking and creative problem-solving. This is a title that rewards patience and experimentation, with a gameplay loop centered around mastering three distinct characters' abilities and discovering how they interact within thoughtfully crafted environments.

Clever Mechanics Shine Through Minimalist Presentation

The Lost Kids immediately establishes its core premise through precise character specialization. Players control Stan, Kenny, and Cartman - each mapped to dedicated keys (1, 2, and 3 respectively) - creating an intuitive switching system that forms the foundation of every challenge. Stan serves as the primary problem-solver with his dual-purpose gun that both activates distant switches and eliminates threats, complemented by a versatile bionic arm capable of grappling across gaps. Cartman provides defensive utility through his shield, which transforms into a gliding apparatus when held overhead, while Kenny remains the group's sole jumper - creating essential vertical mobility.

What elevates these mechanics beyond simple gimmicks is how they interlock within the level design. The game shines when requiring simultaneous coordination, like positioning Cartman as a mobile shield barrier for his companions or using Stan's arm to create pathways for the non-jumping characters. Environments become intricate clockworks where every element serves a purpose, demanding players experiment with character positioning, ability sequencing, and environmental interactions. Failure is reframed as learning, with each restart providing new insights into the spatial puzzles.

The game is deviously clever... requiring lateral thinking combined with trial-and-error, and despite its plain graphics, there is enough substance here to make it worthy.

This trial-and-error approach reveals the game's thoughtful construction. Solutions feel earned rather than handed to players, with "aha" moments arriving after careful observation of environmental clues and character synergies. The minimalist aesthetic, while initially striking as basic, ultimately focuses attention on the mechanical interplay rather than visual distractions. Levels transform into intricate logic puzzles where the joy comes from discovering how three simple ability sets can combine in unexpected ways to overcome seemingly impossible obstacles.

When I first played this game, a few years back, I was struck by the graphics (plain) and the gameplay (complex) but thought there was enough for a review. I filed it away and forgot about it. Then, recently, remembered it again - all of a sudden I realised that its not plain or complex. In actual fact, its a very well designed game. OK, so the graphics are still plain. Nobody can deny that. But the thing is, the game is deviously clever. You control Stan, Kenny and Cartman individually. They can be selected with the 1, 2 and 3 keys. In turn, manoeuvre them around the levels and use their individual skills to reach the goal. The skills are thus: Stan has a gun, it can switch otherwise unreachable switches and can also dispatch enemies. He also has a bionic arm. This can also reach otherwise unreachable areas and, furthermore, can swing across gaps, etc. with it. Cartman has a shield which - obviously - works as a shield. When holding it above his head, he can glide with it. Finally, Kenny is the only character with the ability to jump. Using these abilities in turn and together (if the two boys are behind Cartman, his shield protects them all) the cleverly designed levels will be at your mercy. This game is very smart and will require lateral thinking combined with trial-and-error, and despite its plain graphics, there is enough substance here to make it worthy.
