Sandman

Pure Arcade Thrills

The core experience centers around three distinct gameplay modes that each offer their own flavor of vehicular excitement. Speed-race tests raw velocity as players navigate winding downhill courses, while slalom mode demands precision cornering around obstacles. The standout air-time mode fully embraces the game's snowboarding inspiration, rewarding players for launching their vehicles off jumps and maintaining airborne momentum. This variety prevents gameplay from growing stale, with each mode requiring different driving techniques. The controls strike an ideal balance between accessibility and depth, delivering responsive handling that makes high-speed maneuvers feel intuitive yet satisfying. Courses wind through visually diverse global locations, with terrain designed to facilitate spectacular jumps and drifts that capture the spirit of extreme sports.

Audiovisual Polish

Pakoon 2 punches well above its weight class in presentation, particularly impressive given its freeware status. Vehicle models showcase remarkable detail and texture work, with each car possessing distinctive visual characteristics. The environmental design receives consistent praise for creating visually engaging tracks that complement the racing mechanics, especially in air-time mode where the landscape encourages aerial acrobatics. The audio design features a fitting soundtrack that enhances the high-energy atmosphere, while the option to import custom MP3 playlists provides personalization that many players appreciate. This technical execution demonstrates thoughtful development where both aesthetics and functionality receive equal attention.

Pakoon is essentially a snowboarding game except that instead of riding snowboards, you will be behind the wheel of a high performance car. There are 3 modes of play: speed-race, slalom and air-time and you will be able to race through numerous exotic locations around the globe. You are able to compete against computer players or across LAN or Internet. The graphics are pretty damn good and you need DirectX 8(or later) and an average 3D card. You can even load in your own MP3s so you can groove to your own tunes whilst carving up the slopes. Pakoon delivers great graphics, sound and gameplay and it's 100% free!

This downhill racing is very polished for a freeware game. The graphics are excellent, especially the car models. The one music track suits the game well, but you can use your own mp3's too. The gameplay is great, there are different tracks and cars and 3 gameplay modes. I especially like airtime, in which, of course, you try to get the wheels of the ground as much as possible. The well designed landscapes are perfect for that. I didn't test the multiplayer-mode (couldn't find any players), but single-player is very enjoyable. Two thumbs up!
