Overview

Sequential presents itself as a deceptively simple puzzle experience that quickly reveals intricate layers of complexity beneath its straightforward premise. Early impressions suggest it's designed specifically for dedicated puzzle enthusiasts who crave intellectual challenges, though its steep difficulty curve may prove overwhelming for casual players. While the core concept feels familiar in the puzzle genre, the game distinguishes itself through an elegant escalation of complexity that demands both pattern recognition and strategic foresight.

Puzzle Mechanics That Beguile and Challenge

At its foundation, Sequential operates on beautifully simple rules: players must flip orange squares on a grid while avoiding turning blank squares orange in the process. The elegance lies in how this basic premise rapidly evolves into increasingly sophisticated challenges. Each move becomes a delicate balancing act where flipping one square might solve an immediate problem while creating new complications elsewhere on the board. This creates that perfect puzzle-game tension where every decision carries weight, and a single miscalculation can cascade into failure.

The game's namesake mechanic emerges as its defining feature. Players must execute moves in specific sequences dictated by icons displayed on the left side of the screen. What begins as straightforward two-step sequences gradually expands into multi-layered patterns that require players to mentally track several conditional relationships simultaneously. This progression creates a natural learning curve where early levels serve as essential tutorials for the brain-bending challenges to come.

Never, though, have we seen it quite so infuriatingly complex. Jam-packed with well over a hundred levels, Sequential is a game that any puzzle addict should not miss.

Depth Through Progressive Complexity

With over one hundred levels, Sequential demonstrates impressive longevity for a puzzle game, but its true achievement lies in how it continuously reinvents its core mechanics. The gradual introduction of new elements—additional sequence icons, larger grids, and stricter move limitations—creates a satisfying sense of mastery as players internalize each layer of complexity. Early levels teach fundamental patterns that become essential building blocks for solving later puzzles, rewarding careful observation and pattern recognition.

This carefully structured difficulty curve means that solutions often require both immediate tactical decisions and long-term strategic planning. The limited number of moves per level transforms each puzzle into an optimization challenge where efficiency becomes paramount. Players must consider not just which squares to flip, but in what precise order to execute their moves to satisfy the sequence requirements while achieving the desired board state. This multidimensional thinking creates those satisfying "aha!" moments when a complex pattern suddenly reveals its underlying logic.

We’ve seen the basic formula before. Never, though, have we seen it quite so infuriatingly complex. Jam-packed with well over a hundred levels, Sequential is a game that any puzzle addict should not miss. The game begins, as all the good puzzle games do, with a simple enough premise. The board has some of its squares orange. You have a flipper-type device. Use that to flip over the orange squares. However – the trick is, if you flip a blank square it turns orange. Limiting you to a set number of turns on each level, Sequential manages to stay true to itself and yet deeply bury its true insidious nature until you’re already sucked in. Pay attention on the first few levels, because the fundamental knowledge of all the future levels rests with what you will learn here. The basic patterns-within-patterns gameplay is key to figuring out the complex levels you’ll encounter later on. The title comes from the left hand side of the screen. At first it will indicate two icons: orange and clear. Flipping the icons in order of the sequence indicated will allow you to clear the level. Soon enough the game will expand to include not just two icons on the left, but more… though I’ll let you figure out that part of the puzzle yourself. Enjoy.
