Xenon 2000 Review

Overview

Xenon 2000 delivers a classic space shooter experience with the signature polish Bitmap Brothers fans expect, wrapping satisfying core gameplay in impressive audiovisual presentation. While its fundamental mechanics shine with precision and style, the experience remains frustratingly brief - a single extended level that leaves players craving more content almost immediately after mastering its systems. This creates a peculiar tension between admiration for its craftsmanship and disappointment at its limited scope.

Xenon 2000 is exactly what every space-shooter should be, but for goodness sake. Couldn’t they have made it a little longer?

Polished Fundamentals in a Constricted Package

The game immediately establishes its strengths through exceptionally crafted audiovisual design. Visuals burst with the detailed pixel artistry and slick animations characteristic of Bitmap Brothers' pedigree, creating vibrant cosmic battlegrounds filled with imaginative enemy designs and explosive effects. This visual splendor pairs perfectly with punchy sound design that makes every laser blast and enemy destruction feel impactful. The core shooting mechanics demonstrate remarkable refinement - movement feels responsive, weapon balancing provides strategic depth, and enemy patterns demand skillful dodging and precise aim. These elements combine to create moments of pure arcade bliss that remind players why the genre remains compelling decades after its inception.

Yet this technical excellence exists within perplexingly narrow boundaries. Despite featuring a substantial single level that requires genuine skill to conquer, the absence of additional stages or meaningful progression systems undermines the satisfaction of mastery. Completing the lone level leaves players with undeniable competence in the game's systems but no further challenges to apply these hard-won skills. This creates an experience that feels more like an impressive tech demo than a fully realized product - a showcase of potential that never expands beyond its initial offering. The longing for more content becomes palpable precisely because the foundational gameplay proves so engaging.

Xenon 2000 is a great space shooter direct from the Bitmap Brothers. The graphics, sound and game play are as good as we’ve come to expect from the Bitmap Brother’s and most fans of the genre will take a moment of silence to appreciate the fullness f this game. That is until they realise that there is only one level in the game. It is a long level, but there is still only one, which takes something out of the “satisfaction factor” out of completing a computer game. All in all, Xenon 2000 is exactly what every space-shooter should be, but for goodness sake. Couldn’t they have made it a little longer? I recommend the download if you don’t mind feeling like you want some more.
