Action

Overview

Cho Ren Sha 68k delivers a pure, unadulterated shoot 'em up experience that captures the essence of classic arcade action. This Japanese-developed title throws players into frenetic skies filled with screen-filling explosions and enemy formations that demand precision reflexes. While its core loop provides satisfying shooting sensations, the experience feels more like a solid tribute than a genre-redefining entry. Initial impressions suggest it nails the fundamentals but doesn't push beyond established conventions of the bullet-hell genre.

Blistering Arcade Action

The game's most defining quality is its relentless pace and visual intensity. Waves of enemy ships descend in carefully orchestrated patterns, starting with smaller vessels before unleashing colossal bosses that dominate a quarter of the screen. This escalating scale creates natural tension without overwhelming players, especially since some enemies mercifully retreat after timed intervals rather than demanding elimination. The constant ballet of bullets and explosions maintains adrenaline while avoiding monotony through thoughtful enemy sequencing.

Its pace is blistering and the enemy waves are never monotonous. Frequently ships of larger size follow a few waves of smaller, easier ships to break up any monotony.

Innovative Power-Up Mechanics

Cho Ren Sha 68k introduces a clever twist on traditional shoot 'em up progression through its triangular power-up system. Instead of random collectibles, players constantly navigate between three rotating upgrades: shields for protection, firepower boosts for offense, and bombs for area devastation. The risk-reward element emerges when attempting to capture all three simultaneously by maneuvering into the formation's center – a move that grants bonus points but risks accidentally grabbing an undesired power-up during intense combat. This mechanic adds strategic depth to the otherwise straightforward shooting action, rewarding skillful positioning amid chaos.

Pure Arcade Sensations

The game excels at delivering immediate, uncompromising shooting thrills. Controls respond with razor-sharp precision to player inputs, creating that coveted "perfect shooting sensation" where every dodge and shot feels intentional. Visuals embrace a retro aesthetic with vibrant explosions and clearly defined enemy projectiles, ensuring readability during the most crowded firefights. The audio design complements the action with satisfying explosion effects and energetic soundtrack cues that heighten the sense of immersion.

Awesome retro Shoot em up. Straight to the point, nervous and giving perfect shooting sensations.

This action shoot 'em up from Japan contains blistering speed, high octane explosions and enemy bosses which fill a quarter of the screen. What's not to love? The story fits the bill of any game of this sort - fly for no reason while billions of unnamed enemies are trying to blow you up. Fortunately, the enemies are largely weak and often help you by dropping supplies when they die. The usual method of power-ups has been dispensed with here (a random box of goodies) and you're given the choice of three powerups, which rotate in a triangular pattern. These are shield, power and bombs. You can either choose one power-up specifically, or fly into the center for a moment and receive all three plus bonus points. However, this may have the undesired effect of you accidentally nudging a powerup you don't specifically need at that point, so attempt this with skill. Its pace is blistering and the enemy waves are never monotonous. Frequently ships of larger size follow a few waves of smaller, easier ships to break up any monotony. Not all of them have to be destroyed - they fly away after a set time period, which reduces any "I just have to get this last one" frustration which sometimes happens in shooters. To summarize - it looks good. It plays well. It sounds nice. The powerup system is innovative and brings an extra level of play to the repetitious shoot, explode, wait. In short, its a very solid game which you'd do well to check out.
