Overview

The Complex presents an intriguing premise that immediately captures attention: you control a genetically engineered super-soldier bred as the "perfect weapon" for a futuristic magnet war, now desperately trying to escape the oppressive institution that created him. This top-down shooter blends retro pixel aesthetics with a unique magnetic twist on combat mechanics, creating an experience that shows remarkable inventiveness considering its extremely short development cycle. While the core concept shines through its clever magnet manipulation system, the execution reveals some rough edges that slightly diminish the overall experience.

Clever Magnet Mechanics

The standout feature that elevates The Complex above standard top-down shooters is its innovative magnetic combat system. Throughout each screen-based level, you'll find magnets bolted into the environment that become essential tools for survival. By holding right-click to aim and left-click to fire, you can strategically manipulate these magnets to curve bullets around corners and obstacles, creating deadly ricochets that eliminate enemies positioned in cover. This transforms straightforward firefights into satisfying tactical puzzles where positioning and timing matter as much as reflexes.

The intriguing part is that most screens contain several magnets bolted into the floor. Hold right click to aim and left click to fire, you can use these magnets to your advantage, by causing bullets to round corners and destroy your enemies.

This magnetic manipulation creates moments of genuine cleverness as you discover new ways to turn the environment against your pursuers. The mechanic adds a layer of strategy rarely seen in the genre, forcing you to constantly scan each new screen for magnetic opportunities rather than just reflexively shooting. It's particularly rewarding when you set up elaborate bullet paths that clear multiple enemies with a single well-placed shot.

Retro Aesthetics and Premise

The pixel art visuals effectively establish the game's dystopian sci-fi setting, with clean, readable character designs and environments that communicate the sterile, oppressive nature of the complex you're trying to escape. The protagonist's design as a "sporty little fella" creates an immediate visual contrast with his supposed role as a genetically engineered super-weapon, adding subtle narrative tension before any dialogue appears.

The backstory itself proves surprisingly engaging for such a compact experience. The idea of being created as a weapon in a "futuristic magnet war" establishes immediate stakes, while the straightforward motivation of escaping your creators gives clear purpose to each screen's challenges. This narrative foundation helps elevate The Complex beyond being just another shooter, providing context that makes your struggle feel meaningful.

Pacing and Accessibility Issues

Where The Complex stumbles slightly is in its pacing and accessibility. The requirement to "sit through the text screens" every time you start a new game becomes a noticeable friction point, especially during repeated attempts after dying. This interruption to the game's flow feels particularly jarring in a title built around quick, screen-by-screen challenges where momentum matters.

The difficulty curve also presents some accessibility concerns. While the magnet mechanics are innovative, the game provides minimal tutorialization, throwing players directly into scenarios where enemies "mostly shoot at you" from multiple angles. This creates a steep initial learning curve that might frustrate less patient players, especially when combined with the text screen repetition between attempts.

Impressive Development Context

What makes The Complex particularly noteworthy is its development background: this entire experience was created in under three days. Viewed through this lens, the game's achievements become even more impressive. The fully realized magnetic physics system, cohesive visual style, and clear narrative premise represent an extraordinary accomplishment within such an extreme time constraint. This context helps explain some of the rougher edges while highlighting the developer's clear talent for focused game design.

This is well worth a look especially considering it was created in less than three days.

The compact scope works in the game's favor too - levels are designed as single-screen challenges that fully explore the possibilities of the magnetic mechanics without overstaying their welcome. Each screen presents a new tactical puzzle to solve with your magnetic tools, maintaining freshness throughout the escape attempt.

In The Complex, you play as a sporty little fella whose soul ambition is to escape the horrible institution he was raised in. Sounds like a reasonable enough thing to want to do, since he was genetically bred as the perfect weapon in the futuristic magnet war. However, beleive it or not, there are some people who do not want you to leave the building. It's your task, using your wits, agility and weapon to dodge and blast your way through each screen's obstacles. And most obstacles shoot at you. Naturally. The intriguing part is that most screens contain several magnets bolted into the floor. Hold right click to aim and left click to fire, you can use these magnets to your advantage, by causing bullets to round corners and destroy your enemies. The unique premise and the pixely graphics go a long way to raising this one above average, however having to sit through the text screens is a bit of a hassle when starting a new game. This is well worth a look especially considering it was created in less than three days.
