A dark - nearly monochrome - and very impressive vertical shooter from Japan.
Vertically scrolling shoot 'em ups. What's not to love. One of the greatest genres of all time, right along with horizontal shooters and arena shooters. Brilliant, the lot of 'em. This particular title is no exception.
Employing a power-up system similar to (though much friendlier than) the recently reviewed Blast Radius, this shooter is, well, absolutely brilliant from head-to-toe. The magnificent pixelart is nearly monochrome with its simplicity of design and the gameplay hits you right from the beginning.
Boss levels are large and impressive - they're also time based. Kill them as hard as you like and you'll still be there for the same amount of time. This makes strategic upgrades essential. Use the [X] key to select power-ups from the menu on the right, and collect dropped bonuses to switch the upgrades.
The only problem is, it does get a little tight at times and as such, lives can be lost quite quickly. That point aside, it's still really, really excellent.
Urban Uprising: Dark New World is a pretty good shmup. It uses a Gradius-style powerup system, and feels very similar to Demolition Gunner in both gameplay and graphics. The boss battles are intense and the game gets to be very challenging. Overall a great game to add to any shmup fan's collection.
