Worm Wars II

Worm Wars II

Action

Overview

Worm Wars II delivers straightforward pest control action in the quirky tradition of freeware garden warfare games. As the overlooked second entry in its four-game series, it maintains the core mouse-driven shooting mechanics that define the franchise while showing some expected early-series roughness. This installment captures the simple joy of battling garden invaders with an arsenal of creative weapons, though its unpolished edges remind players it's an evolutionary step in the series rather than a refined masterpiece. For fans of unconventional indie games, it offers reliable, bite-sized entertainment that stays true to the series' charmingly bizarre premise.

Core Gameplay and Series Context

Worm Wars II drops players into familiar territory: a garden overrun by wriggling pests that need exterminating. Movement relies entirely on mouse control, creating an accessible point-and-shoot experience where players target creepy-crawlies with various firearms. The arsenal includes satisfying standbys like machine guns for rapid fire, stationary turrets for defensive positioning, and the ever-popular flamethrower for crispy crowd control. While the full weapon roster remains a surprise per the available feedback, these tools create engaging moment-to-moment gameplay focused on tactical positioning and target prioritization.

As the middle child in a four-game series, this installment carries noticeable developmental growing pains. The experience feels less polished than later entries, with certain rough edges in presentation and mechanics that reflect its position in the franchise's evolution. Yet these limitations don't overshadow the fundamental enjoyment of the core loop. The game successfully translates the simple pleasure of virtual pest control into responsive mouse-based combat that rewards quick reflexes and strategic weapon selection.

Its enjoyable and fun and like the rest of the series, you should check it out.

Over the years, you may have noticed certain recurring themes here. One notable sub-genre of the freeware scene which you might've missed is: Games featuring bugs. Specifically, in this case, games featuring worms. The Worm Wars series has spanned four games. These areWorm Wars, Worm Wars II,Worm Wars 3andWorm Wars IV. The games in this series all received a review here - except for volume II. This review will rectify that neglect. The story, as ever, is the same here. There are nasty things in the garden and you don't want them there. Fans of the series will already be versed with the controls and mechanics of the game. This entails moving with the mouse and shooting. Shooting what? How about machine guns, turrets, always a favourite: Flamethrower. There are more, but I won't spoil that surprise for you. Needless to say, being the second in a series of four, it is a little rough around the edges. There are ways around that roughness, and therein lies a shiny nugget of a game. Its enjoyable and fun and like the rest of the series, you should check it out.
