Adventure

Overview

Voodoo emerges as a compelling entry in the point-and-click adventure genre, immersing players in a dark narrative inspired by King Diamond's occult mythology. Early impressions reveal a game that prioritizes atmospheric storytelling and visual craftsmanship, though its conventional mechanics may feel familiar to genre veterans. Playing as Salem—a butler secretly serving a voodoo cult while employed by unsuspecting aristocrats—creates fascinating moral tension as you balance domestic duties with clandestine rituals. This duality forms the backbone of an experience that rewards patience and appreciation for mood over mechanical innovation.

A Dark Tale of Divided Loyalties

The game's greatest strength lies in its morally complex narrative, where players navigate Salem's double life protecting a voodoo cult from his own employers. The Lafayettes—David and his pregnant wife Sarah—become increasingly disturbed by the nocturnal drumming ceremonies, setting up the central conflict. This premise creates delicious dramatic irony as you outwardly maintain the household while secretly sabotaging efforts to stop the rituals. The story unfolds through environmental details and dialogue rather than exposition, rewarding observant players with gradual revelations about the cult's purpose and Salem's motivations.

The plot and story of Voodoo is a dark, mysterious one. You must protect the Voodoo cult while maintaining your cover.

Visual Storytelling Excellence

Voodoo's visual design stands as its most universally praised element, with meticulously crafted environments that breathe life into its eerie setting. Scenic vistas and dimly lit interiors create a constant sense of foreboding, where flickering candlelight casts dancing shadows across ritual artifacts and aristocratic furnishings alike. This picturesque quality serves the narrative perfectly, contrasting the Lafayettes' opulent home with the primal energy of the cult's gathering places. The art direction consistently reinforces the central tension between surface appearances and hidden truths, making every location feel like an active participant in the story.

Conventional Adventure Mechanics

The gameplay follows well-established point-and-click traditions, utilizing what the review describes as a "stereotypical strategy game control board." Players navigate environments, collect items, and solve puzzles through familiar verb-based interactions (examine, use, take, etc.). A contextual blurb at the bottom of the screen provides guidance, helping players understand environmental feedback and potential interactions. While functional, this approach doesn't innovate beyond genre standards, potentially feeling dated to players seeking fresh mechanics. The puzzles generally serve the story without becoming frustrating roadblocks, maintaining focus on the atmospheric narrative rather than challenge.

Voodoo is a 3D point and click adventure game inspired by the King Diamond Voodoo story. The plot and story of Voodoo is a dark, mysterious one. You are playing as Salem, the buttler of David and his pregnant wife Sarah Lafayette. Unknown to them is that you are a henchman of the Voodoo cult who meets late at night with other Voodoo cult members to perform rituals. The Lafayettes are disturbed by the late night Voodoo drums and decide to make an end to it. You must protect the Voodoo cult. Graphics in Voodoo are outstanding. Very picturesque scenery and it suits the mysterious feel that the game has. You use the stereotypical strategy game control board to navigate, use, pick up and do other actions in this game with a blurb at the base of the screen to help you with what's going on. If you are a fan of adventure games this is a game for you.
